When new content is released on BTLO, whether it's an Investigation or Challenge, it is considered 'Active'. This means that points can be earned by answering questions, and you can progress through the category pathways (such as Digital Forensics or Incident Response) to earn new badges and titles.
As new content is brought into the platform, the oldest Active content becomes Retired. This means the Investigation or Challenge is no longer worth any points, and permits players to share walkthroughs or write-ups of the content as a guide for newer players. The reason we remove points is that public write-ups for active content can harm the competitive nature of the platform, as players can read guides and earn points without actually investigating themselves.
Retired investigations are clearly labelled on the lab listing
You can filter on Active or Retired statuses
We maintain 100 Active Investigations at all times. When we release 3 new labs bi-weekly, we also retire 3 of the oldest labs.
Time-Limited Events
When we run time-limited events, such as Halloween and Winter, the content is immediately retired when the event ends. This allows and encourages the sharing of walkthroughs, including the official BTLO Replay videos.
